A brand new site for Charlotte & Mecklenburg County
Happy Saturday WIGlets,
As many of you know, the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County does really, really cool things (check out EDH's flickr photos for more ev)...
Anyway, they are asking for comments on their newly redesigned site, and you know, since we're involved in the same thing, I'd like to hear what you all think. What did they do right? What do you think they should have done differently? What should we learn from them?
The current site: http://www.plcmc.org/default.htm
The note to patrons: http://www.plcmc.org/aboutUs/beta.htm
The new site for comments (woo hoo: beta 4-eva): http://beta.plcmc.org/
Just as an update: in addition to the Sirsi upgrade, the Web Content Team is working on some major, time-intensive projects including the new CMS, the new JoCoBusiness site, JoCoTeen Scene, a new Web calendar system, and a federated search. So, I'll be scheduling a December meeting for everyone who can attend. More on that later...
Hope you're all enjoying your weekend--the weather is beautiful--today I went geocaching at SMPark--and I totally want to have library-sponsored community geocaches. If any of y'all are into geocaching, let me know. We need to talk.

The old site looks pretty rudimentary. It was time for an update. I do like the white space around the edges of the screen of the old design though. It gives my eyes time to relax from all of the stuff crammed into that center sqaure.
The new site looks sleeker and slicker (though I think I'd get tired of that gradient fill of the "THE PUBLIC LIBRARY"). The top navigation box is nice. Lots of little splashes of color on the pages to draw the eye. Not super-crowded. This design makes me think that their patrons are used to navigating the internet and are ready to move forward. Links are tastefully done (no yucky flyout menus or past-their-prime image rollovers. I like that the catalog is right on the front page and very noticable.
The 'find libraries near your ZIP' is a neat feature. Everyone knows their ZIP code, but they may not know where Lackman Library is.
I really like PLCMC's use of good photos. It looks like they're actually of library patrons instead of stock photos or clipart.
Hope my feedback's helpful
