Scope Defined, Redbeard's thoughts

I just got finished reading Scope Defined. Here are my thoughts. And, you might be interested to know that blog, RSS, and podcast aren't in Blogger's dictionary.

Part I: I think we should say something about how these things are all FREE.

JoCoLibrary: Library Catalog should be the primary category, or at least, the top item.

Integrated functions/features:

Daily Feature. Could we turn the front page into a blog? With links and a catalog search box? Or make the feature feel more bloggy, with the ability to leave comments?
Patron-created content. I think we should include forums in the new web world, where patrons can give feedback and converse online. This would probably mean moderators, but we could get some tech-savvy volunteers, perhaps.
What you might not expect. We could have some sort of Treasure Box (like amazon's Gold Box). This would be really cool if we could customize it for patrons, based on the holds they place or the books they search for.
RSS feeds in/out. Weekly library-related podcasts would be cool! Maybe with the week's events, new book reviews, a word of the day, etc. Also, a home for storytime podcasts. And an 'IM a librarian' link, with an online status indicator.

Part II: Will this be searchable by keyword, or just browsable, like blog archives? Will we incorporate some sort of topic keyword for posts?

Examples of Ephemeral Content. Top 10 reference questions this month. I love this idea. When I read this, I thought of some sort of 'stump the ref. librarian' contest. :D

Where Ephemeral Content lives in the site. How long are we going to be archiving?

Questions and other things.

We need to define what happens.. I like the idea of having color-coded 2nd tier sites, or a different look-and-feel for each one. Something that tells users that they're in a different place.

Reference Librarians.. Maybe we can use this redesign as an opportunity to make an online answer file team, who would update things as they changed. I don't want to step on Kerry's toes, though.

Where do birth-to-6 resources go? Maybe we could have a family section on the site, similar to Kids Corner and Teens. Because it is (most likely) going to be the parents who use the information. I'm worried that there might be a lot of overlap between this and the JoCoFamily site, though.

The original handwritten comments are available for purchase, if anyone's interested. ;)
